THE VILLAGE SCHOOL MASTER

C1. Based on your reading of the poem, find answers to the questions and write them in your notebook.

Ans: The School Master's school was located in a small village.

2) How did the children react to the school master’s jokes?

Ans: The children laughed with fake delight, they pretended to enjoy his jokes.

3) How could the children find the morning disaster?

Ans: The children could notice that their master's face with misfortune and that was the morning disaster.

Ans: Kind as well as severe.

5) Which of the following is not true of the village school master?

Ans: He could write poems and songs.

6) What puzzled the villagers?

Ans: The villagers puzzled by vast knowledge and skills of the school master and they thought how such a small head could carry enormous knowledge.


7) Why does Oliver Goldsmith say that the "blossom'd furze" was "unprofitably gay?"

Ans: The fertile grass spread out over there in nature, not used for profit. So, Oliver Goldsmith says that the "blossom'd furze" was "unprofitably gay."

1) What is the children's view of the teacher?

Ans: The village school master was strict and firm but they respected him because he was dedicated to his teaching.

2) Why did the villagers respect the school master?

Ans: The village school master knew almost everything. He could read and write, he could do survey of the land, forecast the weather, and solve sums. So, the villagers respected the school master.

3) What impression does the poem give you of the (a) qualities and (b) abilities of the village school master?

Ans: (a) The village school master was affectionate towards his children and dedicated for his teaching, even though he was strict but on another side he was kind also.

(b) The village school master had vast knowledge that was very useful to him to do survey of the land, forecast the weather, solve sums, writing, reading, even arguing in the debate.

4) Pick out the words that convey the different emotions of the poet.

Ans: Severe, counterfeited glee, gazing rustics, strict and kind.
