ETHICS

Comprehension:

 

C1. Answer the following questions in a sentence each:

 

1) What question did the teacher ask every time?

 Ans: The teacher asked every time, “If there were a fire in a museum, which would you save, a Rembrandt painting or an old woman who hadn’t many years left anyhow?”

 

2) Were the children able to answer the question correctly?

 Ans: No, the children were not able to answer the question correctly.

 

3) The children responded to the question __________.

 Ans:  (b) half-heartedly.

 

 4) Where is the speaker standing when the speaker narrates this incident?

 Ans: The speaker is standing in a museum when she narrates the incident.

 

5) What had the speaker realized after many years?

 Ans: The speaker realized after many years that ethics and moral principles can be cultured from knowledge and maturity.

 

C2. Answer the following questions:

 1) Pick out the expression in the poem that indicates that the question did not interest the children.

 Ans: “Half-heartedly” is the expression that indicates the question did not interest the children.

 

2) The children were “restless on hard chairs” because

 Ans: (b) They were unable to understand the ethics dilemma.

C3. Discuss with your friends if the poem is only about a lesson of ethics learnt in school or if it offers something higher than this.

Ethics are learned or taught by experience or maturity. In this poem teacher had represented a view of classroom and museum to drag their attentions towards moral values. It is very much needed to inculcate moral values among students. As we talk about painting and old lady children should understand and learn what value of things and human beings is. Overall when teacher talks about classroom, it might be difficult to teach ethics rather than experience.

 

C4. List a few “ethics” you have to follow in the situations given below:

1) Place of work: The most important of thing about place of work is to be honest and punctual to work. Be friendly with colleagues and respect them apart from their caste, creed or race. There should be team work, united and loyal to each other. Ethics plays very important role in every sector.

 

2) Place of learning: Discipline first study next, at the place of learning one must have moral values, discipline, obedience, punctuality, honesty, respecting each other. It is duty of every individual to give importance to school property, help each other and understand the value of everything.

 

3) Place of worship: Every worship place should be respected and every individual should visit with devotions. It is duty of every person to maintain decorum of that place and be silent and to pray in such a way that you should disturb others.

 

4) Place of living: Swatch Bharat/ Clean India, this particular mission had started to maintain cleanliness in home, surrounding, colony, city and etc. We should keep house, colony and country clean. Every individual should love and respect each other in family. There should be always love and affection in your living.
