Comprehension:

Answer the following questions briefly.

 

1) How is Balai related to the writer?

 Ans: Balai was Tagore’s elder brother’s son and Tagore’s nephew. Balai was staying with writer as Balai was motherless child and his brother went to England for higher studies.

 

2) What kind of a boy was Balai?

 Ans: Balai was unique boy as per his name; he was totally different from other boys of his age. Balai was so much affectionate towards nature; he had feelings and emotions for flora. Overall if talk about him, he was tremendously attached to nature. He used to talk with flowers, trees, sky, rain, grass, according to him they were living creatures. If was unhappy when the grass cutter mowed the grass, he would be disturb if someone broke a bough or plucked flowers.

 

3) What traits in Balai do you admire most?

 Ans:  Balai was so sensitive towards plants and trees. He had lot of respect towards nature. Many of them didn’t think about flora or fauna, but Balai was tensed and disturbed if anyone broke a bough or plucked flowers or hit a tree. Even was feeling unease when the grass cutter came to mow the lawn.

 

4) Why didn’t Balai want the grass-cutter to cut the plants?

 Ans: According to Balai nature was everything for him. Even he thought plants and trees were his friends, small creepers, flowers, medical plants, Kalmehs, Anatamuls and everything would give reasons for Balai’s stupefaction. He didn’t like the grass cutter to cut the plants because those plants or creepers would get hurt or die.


5) What do you think is the message in the story?

 Ans: Appeal for life on earth (flora and fauna) is the message in the story. Human beings cut plants to avoid their growth. Many don’t take care of plants as we take care of animals. It is duty of every individual to know the value of nature and all living beings including flora and fauna. Everyone should understand that nature plays very important role in our ecosystem.
