3) For what purpose did the Invisible Man choose Marvel?

Ans. One of them was that Griffin wanted someone who was just like him. Mr Marvel fit the bill perfectly. Like Griffin, Marvel was a tramp and also considered an outcast among people. Moreover, he had the same temperament as Griffin. Another reason was that Griffin realized that Marvel was a simpleton who would not notice that Griffin was actually invisible. Burdened with his own problems, Marvel had no time to be inquisitive. Also, he did not have the courage to question Griffin.

4) Why was the Invisible Man not able to leave the super market with clothes on his body?

Ans. When Griffin woke up to leave the super market with clothes on his body, the workers came , and he almost got caught. The workers chased him around the store (they could see him because he was wearing clothes); but once again, Griffin took off his clothes to become invisible. Since he couldn’t steal clothes, Griffin had to leave the store with nothing.

5) Why did Kemp’s neighbor, Mr. Heelas, not take him into his house?

Ans. Griffin was after Dr Kemp. When Mr Heelas woke up and saw his neighbour’s house, he at once realised that the Invisible Man was after him. Dr Kemp came running to him, but he denied him entry. Perhaps, he was trying to save his family, but this was not a moral act...!!

III. 1) Describe the scene when the stranger showed the people at the hotel what was strange about him.

Ans. The stranger remains locked in the parlor all morning. He rings his bell for Mrs. Hall several times, but she does not answer it. About noon, he emerges and demands to know why his meals have not been brought to him. Mrs. Hall tells him that his bill has not been paid in five days. She refuses to accept the excuse that he is waiting for a remittance. When he produces some money, she refuses it, saying she first wants to know why he doesn’t enter by doorways and move about like normal people.

For his answer, the stranger removes all his head wrappings, including his nose and moustache. He thus looks like a person with a missing head. At the sound of screams a crowd of people run toward the inn. “Eye-witnesses” suddenly babble hysterical stories of the man attacking the servant girl, and brandishing a knife. Bobby Jaffers, the village constable, appears with a warrant.

The stranger slaps Jaffers with his glove, but then says he will surrender. He will not accept handcuffs, however. As the constable, Halls and others watch, the man removes the rest of his clothes, becoming invisible before them. He tells them that he is invisible. Jaffers wants to take him in for questioning on suspicion of robbing the Bunting home. A scuffle ensues, and the stranger, now known as the “Invisible Man,” escapes.

 Or

2) Write a character sketch of Dr. Kemp.

Ans. Dr. Kemp was a good character in the novel. He was a college mate of Griffin. He was a man of principles and understood his responsibilities to his fellow men and women. Not only he helped Griffin in his hour of need but also dared to risk his life for saving his fellow men and women from the cruel plans of Griffin. He was quite observant and self-confident scientist. He examined the first traces of the Invisible man’s presence in his house objectively. On coming face with him, Kemp did not at all get started. Without losing his composure, he heard Griffin’s entire story with

patience and assured to provide all the help he could. However, after he read all the reports about the invisible man as printed in the newspapers, he sent a word to the police chief, Colonel Adye to come and arrest this criminal.

After he became sure Griffin was a danger mankind, he took decisions in the larger interest of the welfare of the society. The manner in which he got Griffin arrested – by making himself bait, shows he was capable of putting his life in danger for the larger interests of society. Griffin was selfish; but Kemp could sacrifice his own life, this was the main difference between them. Therefore, Kemp earns the admiration of the readers for the positive qualities for grit and determination.

IV. 1) ” In Griffin, the Invisible Man, we see the potential for evil that science has”. Discuss.

Ans. Griffin’s story is of a man who had no conscience, was callous towards other people and simply self-centered. He appeared to be at war with the entire mankind. All his actions stemmed from his desire to save himself, with not a thought about the pain he inflicted on others. That some traits were inborn can be seen in how he hid his work from his own professor, lest he or anyone else claimed the credit from it. When he was short of money he continued his experiments, without any thoughts of the consequences, he robed his own father, who committed suicide because the money was not his. He attended his father’s funeral without feeling sorry for his own act; instead he blamed his father for being a sentimental fool. He experimented on a cat, with no concern for the poor creature’s cries of pain. He threw it out and never tried to find whether it was alive or dead. He burnt down the house at Great Portland Street when the landlord and his sons found about his experiments and were horrified. He was only worried about covering his trail.

After becoming invisible he committed one brutal act after another, not because they were necessary for his survival, but simply because he enjoyed doing them. The way he looted his owner of a small costume shop, and left after striking the old man on his head, spoke volumes about his inhumanity. He terrorized Marvel when he was on the run, fought with the policemen. His plan to spread reign of terror among people using his powers of invisibility really shocked Dr. Kemp. He even tried to kill him for betraying him. In his final run from the people hunting him, he killed an old man with a rod because he bumped into him. Before his death, he had sunk to the lowest depth a man could go and was truly a monster in human form.

2) Give an account of Griffin’s story as told to Dr. Kemp.

Ans. Dr.Kemp was sitting in this room probably thinking of some experiments. When he hears the sound of gunshots, He wonders whether people have gone mad. Later in the night someone rings the door bell, but no one is seen, his maid informs him that its probably a runaway ring. And when Dr. Kemp goes back to his room he observes blood stains in the floor mat (invisible mans blood stain is visible). When he gets into the room he sees, that his bed has been depressed just like someone is sitting in the bed. He hears a voice calling Kemp, at first he ignores later is convinced that invisible man exists, and the man is none other than his junior during his college times.

Later Griffin tells Dr. Kemp his story..... Griffin, the Invisible Man, tells his own story to Doctor Kemp, his old acquaintance. He tells him that he dreams to establish a. reign of terror by his invisibility. He believes in killing people. His behavior becomes reprehensible. Kemp refuses to be a part of his plan. He lays a trap to get him caught. He writes a note to Adye, the police chief. Griffin thinks that he has been betrayed. His story becomes an essential part of the main plot because Griffin returns to take revenge on Kemp for betraying him. Kemp follows his housemaid and escapes through a window. but is soon followed by Griffin who can see him but he can't see Griffin This climax takes the plot to its logical conclusion when Griffin is chased by the people of the town. Some of the people are able to grasp the invisible man’s wrists and ankles and hold him down. The conflict in the plot is resolved with the death of the Invisible Man.

V. Write short notes on any two of the following.

1) The stranger’s luggage : the stranger's luggage is brought from the station by a man named Fearenside, who has a dog. The stranger has lots of luggage, including boxes of glass bottles cushioned by straw. It was a remarkable luggage. There were a couple of trunks indeed, such as a rational man might need, but in addition there were books, very big and fat books of which some were just in an incomprehensible handwriting. There were boxes and cases, containing objects packed in straw, as it seemed to Hall, tugging with a casual curiosity at the straw, glass bottles.

2) Mrs. Hall : Mrs.Hall, the owner of the 'Coach and Horses' inn is a courteous and caring hostess. She is hospitable towards her guests at the inn. She manages her inn in an efficient manner. She is practical and pragmatic in her business. She displays affectionate courtesy towards the stranger as there are few lodgers in winter. She tries to involve the stranger in conversation but fails because the stranger is reclusive. She is a good manager and does not want anyone to disturb her guest who wants to be alone in the room. She is a domineering wife and nags her husband about drinking. She is a strict business woman. She does not send food in the stranger’s room for he has not paid the bill. Then she objects to the straw lying 0n the floor in the stranger’s room. She cares for the cleanliness in the room. She is friendly with the country people and gets their help and cooperation whenever needed.

3) Mr. Wicksteed’s Murder : Mr. Wicksteed was a man of forty-five or forty-six, steward to Lord Burdock, of inoffensive habits and appearance, the very last person in the world to provoke such a terrible antagonist. Against him it would seem the Invisible Man used an iron rod dragged from a broken piece of fence. There were still people who had not heard of the invisible man. Mr. Wicksteed was brutally murdered within two hundred yards from Burdock’s lodge gate. He was an amiable man. Mr. Wicksteed was on his way home for his mid-day meal. A schoolgirl reported seeing him walking towards the gravel pit, away from his direct path home, bent forward and striking repeatedly at something in front of him with his walking stick. An iron rod moving around by itself seems to have aroused his curiosity and led to the tragedy.

4) Mr. Marvel: Marvel is an eccentric bachelor and local tramp who likes to be comfortable and take his time about things. He has come across a pair of boots in a ditch. He has tried them on and found them too big, and is occupied in contemplating the boots when he hears a voice nearby. Marvel talks about boots with the voice for several minutes before turning to see his visitor and finding no one there.

First Marvel tells himself that he has had too much to drink, then that his imagination has played some sort of trick on him. The Invisible Man begins throwing things at Marvel to convince him that he is not just imagining the presence. Eventually the Man convinces Marvel that he is real and is in need of an accomplice who will first give him food, water and shelter. He delivers an unfinished threat of what he will do if Marvel betrays him.

Answer:

The wise king-King Soloman

One day, when Soloman was sitting in the court, two women entered. The two of them were arguing over a small baby boy. Both of them said that they were the mothers. The duo had come to the king for a remedy. “This woman’s baby died in the night. Then she switched her baby with mine! I am the mother of this baby”, one of the screamed.

“No!” replied the other. “The living one is mine”. This argument continued for a while. The king couldn’t possibly know whose child the baby was! But wise King Solomon had an idea. “Bring me the sword”, he asked suddenly. The sword was brought.

Then he said, “Divide the child into half. Give one piece to both of them”, he ordered. Upon hearing this, one of the women became shocked. “No my lord” she pleaded. “Do not do that, the baby will die. Please give the child to her, but don’t kill him”. Whereas the other woman said, “Let it be. That way, neither I nor she will get the baby”.

At that very moment, the king took back his order and gave the first woman the baby. He then addressed the court and told them that a mother would never let her baby die. And that’s how he knew who the real mother was. All of his courtiers realized how wise there king truly was and respected his judgment.

Subject-Poor bus service

Sir,

I want to draw to draw your kind attention towards the irregular bus service in our city. The passengers face hardship because the bus is never on time. Sometimes, people have to wait a lot to catch a bus. Even so the drivers and conductors are too lazy and careless as they pass the stoppage without stopping the bus.

I tell you a story about the city busses. Yesterday, a young boy has to go to his interview in the financial company. He has to take a bus of his route to reach the company. The bus haven't stopped at his stoppage and because it is very important for him to reach the company. So he started to follow the bus, although he reached the bus but he had a sharp cut on his arm. He bandaged his cut and go with a painful mind and what about lateness????

Sir, I tell you the only one story think about is how many passengers are suffering daily because of this circumstances. Sometimes, we see many busses traveling on the same route. On the other hand there is a time that there are no busses.

I For this purpose in my views you have to put more busses on the road, the older one have to be diamante, no need to refer the busses on busy and coward roads. If you and your newspaper help us to send this request,

I. therefore, request you to look into the matter. I am sure that the situation of city will improve time to time. Its a pure humble request sir, please ensure it.

Thanking You, Yours faithfully, Smriti Kashyap

Subject: Bad road conditions of the city.

Sir/Madam,

It is with great dismay that I am bringing under your notice, the deteriorating road conditions in our locality. I write this letter to highlight how the present miserable condition of roads is affecting the lives of the citizens on a regular basis. The increasing number of potholes is becoming a death trap for late night drivers. Because of the several broken edges and potholes, the vehicles have to halt after very short intervals therefore hindering the smooth run of transport. Often enough, traffic comes to a standstill, making it difficult for school and office goers to reach their destinations, on time. . Traffic jams consisting of a lengthy serpentine queue of vehicles have become every passenger’s nightmare. Despite lodging repeated complaints to the local authorities, no actions have been taken yet. All assurances have been given in vain. Owing to this deep distress, there’s a developing unrest. I hope to use your daily as a medium of raising concern for this grave issue that affects the lives of a million people and hope it reaches the appropriate audience soon.

Thank you

Yours sincerely

 Anay Mehta
