A QUESTION OF SPACE

Comprehension:

 Read the lesson silently. The sequence of events in the lesson has been given below in a jumbled order. Rearrange them and write.

 1. The conflict had acquired a distinct edge ever since he had met Anuj.

2. Anuj had turned into a friend very quickly, a much older friend.

3. His class grades had dropped; he had started skipping group tuitions.

4. Anuj had started journalism on his own and took up photography later.

5. “It seems to me that the pressure is worse for children of doctors”.

6. “It will help you witness your reactions as if they were happening to someone else”.

7. “If you still have not found out, when do you intend to enroll?”

8. He felt that he needed time to pursue his own interests and pleasures, especially after he met Anuj.

 

Read the lesson and share your response before answering the following questions in three or four sentences each.

 1) Vikrant’s mother was harping on the importance of the year. Why was she anxious about Vikrant?

  Ans: According to Vikrant’s mother class XI was a good base for class XII. She knew that class XII would be a crucial year. Vikrant had the capacity to get admitted in an excellent institute for medical. Vikrant’s mother was concerned that Vikrant should get ready himself face competitive exam and get admission to a prestigious medical college.

 

2) Anuj had spun into Vikrant’s life like a ‘new universe’. Why did Vikrant feel so? Who was Anuj?

 Ans: Anuj was friend of Vikrant. He could recognize Vikrant’s troubles. Anuj was not just a person with lively ideas on photography; even he knew connection between human beings and all other living species. He gave new ideas to Vikrant mainly the stiff language of the self and how to control expressions and feelings.

 

3) ‘The identity of Vikrant with Anuj created tension between Vikrant and his parents’. How did it happen?

 Ans: Vikrant was only son for his parents and his parents had drilled him always to be a doctor. When Vikrant skipped his tuitions, extra classes and his grades dropped down then his parents were unhappy and tensed. They thought Vikrant’s behavior and his routine had changed due to Anuj’s friendship.

 

4) Vikrant said, “Medicine is considered ……gives prestige”. Is this thought prejudicial? Do you agree with this opinion?

 Ans: Many considered Medicine is the noblest profession because the doctor could save life after God and it is profession which helps in saving lives of human beings. Apart from medicine there are so many other field and even they too are worthy but many think doctorate is worthy than all other profession but it’s not true because every profession has its own significance.

5) What was the reply of Anuj when Vikrant asked him how his suggestions would help him?

 Ans: Observing body and its reactions would help to distance him from them. And that would help to control over them and become aware of situation. It overall depends only to respond rather than reacting to a situation. This particular method might help to handle the situation.

  

6) When did Vikrant start his self-observation? What did he observe? (Refer paras 23-25)

 Ans: Virkant had a conversation with his father and his mouth was dry and head firm, body somewhat deformed. Virkrant had self observed at that time and he noticed his father’s last remark sent a strong wave of heat.

 

 7) How did Vikrant’s father try to convince him to join tuitions for medical entrance?

 Ans; Vikrant’s father convinced him to tuitions for medical entrance because they trained him for a career, for a highly competitive exam. One wrong answer could make all the difference, it would be better if he bowed his mind to investigate a training center, somewhat than waste time with inappropriate things.

 

8) What are the last two steps of self-observation suggested by Anuj to Vikrant?

 Ans: Anuj suggested two last steps of self-observation to Vikrant were: In the initial one, the instant an active feeling comes, if it ought to be restricted,Vikrant should make a note of it without expressing it.  In the next one, the person should express a feeling reverse to what one really feels.

 

9) “He did this with awareness that it was the right thing for him to do.” What does ‘awareness’ refer to here?

 Ans: “Understanding” is referred to “Awareness”. Vikrant had enrolled himself for coaching classes for a medical entrance test was his awareness. And Vikrant’s parents had the awareness that just as they had encouraged him in his interest, he should abide by their interest.

 

 10) The word ‘Space’ in the title of the lesson has a significant reference. Comment on the title.

 Ans:  This title of the lesson represents a person’s individual choice and freedom and preference for own interests rather others. Moreover many parents who put pressure on their kids to do what their choices rather than enquiring about child’s interest.
